    New Connection

    New Connection

Whether you are looking to connect domestic premises, or non-domestic premises such as a shop, industrial unit, or large commercial development, all the information you need is here.

Introduction

This is where to begin the process for a new connection. From this page you can apply for:

- Residential premises.

- Commercial premises.

- Multi use buildings.

- Projects or developments.

To modify an already existing connection, please visit the Existing Connections page.

Before you begin your application, it is helpful to understand what you can expect throughout the process.

We want to make your journey to a new connection as easy as we can, recognising that each new connection is different.

Once we have the required information to support your application, you will be assigned a single point of contact who will work with you to understand your requirements.

The steps outlined below will help you get started.

What information you need to apply

Before you begin, it will be helpful to have the following information to hand, as this will be needed during your application:

- Your name, contact details & address.

- Owner/Occupier details (if this isn’t you) & a letter of authority.

- The site address (where you want the connection).

- A site location plan showing the site boundary & site ownership – our preference is scaled at 1:500, indicating the proposed layout of any new buildings, roads & metering positions.

- The date you require the first connection to be made (MM/YYYY format).

- The date when the site is due for completion (MM/YYYY format).

- The total maximum capacity at each property & heating type (if applicable).

- Details of any generation equipment e.g., PV cells (solar panels), wind turbines.

- Details of any other electrical equipment (if applicable) e.g., motors, welders, air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, electric vehicle charge points.

- Status of planning permission if required.

Additional guidance

In most circumstances, we will conduct a site visit. Our team will contact you to arrange a suitable date and time to visit.

In some cases, we may ask you to provide further information regarding your connection to ensure that we have understood your requirements before preparing your connection offer. We may also need to obtain legal rights before we can facilitate your connection. Our team will be on hand to support you and keep you updated with progress.

Please note that your site will need to be ready before we can begin any work. We will contact you to discuss your preparations to avoid any delays.

Before the connection is delivered, we will send you an MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) - this is your new supply number. Once received, you should contact your electricity supplier to arrange the installation of your meter.

Frequently asked questions

The law requires that a customer requesting a connection to be made by a Distribution Network Operator must provide a notice (which is your application). It states as part of the customer's application you must specify the date on or by which the connection is to be made.

This will help us to identify your premises, determine land ownership and ensure that any impact to third party land is understood. The plan should be free of unnecessary detail and be suitable for use as a background layer for our proposals to be prepared.

The site location plan, with the boundary and the proposed meter positions clearly marked is part of the minimum information we require you to provide.

You can use our online mapping tool to submit your site location plan or alternatively provide an ordnance survey or land registry plan. If you are struggling to provide us with a site location plan, our team can assist you.

If you are unsure, we always recommend you speak to an electrician who will be able to support you.

We require a letter of authority if you are acting on behalf of the legal and registered owner or occupier of the premises where they require a new connection or modification to an existing connection. This letter should confirm that you have been appointed as an agent and have authority to act on behalf of your client.

Our Open Data portal offers access to data and information about our distribution network, including capacity availability.
