Engaging to deliver a better energy future

We successfully delivered our eight year Business Plan (2015-23), which was created following proactive engagement with thousands of stakeholders across the communities we serve and included a £3 billion investment to deliver improvements for our customers.

We're now delivering our current business plan (RIIO ED2) which sets out our approach to deliver a greener future and will see us invest £2.8 billion between 2023 and 2028.  It was created following our largest ever programme of engagement where we actively sought and listened to the viewpoints of a range of customers and other key stakeholders across the region.

We've set out our plans for key areas including future energy systems, network improvements and security, our role as an economic enabler, supporting decarbonisation and net zero emissions targets and delivering for our customers through high quality, fairly priced and inclusive services. Click here to find out more.

Our approach to stakeholder engagement

We have a holistic and enduring approach to stakeholder engagement.

Our engagement principles are to be stakeholder-led, representative and inclusive, open and transparent, responsive and accessible and adaptive. Our engagement process is underpinned by our engagement principles and supported by extensive assurance and governance. We always seek to identify and understand; engage; analyse, act and feedback, and measure and improve.

We challenge our own projects and plans, prioritise change, share news about our work and role, learn from others and respond to real-world needs in our community.

Encouraging critical friends

We have embedded our approach to engagement through our Social Issues Expert Group and Stakeholder Panel. They provide invaluable input, insight and challenge to our business.

Acting as critical friends, they challenge our work, ensuring we consider what it's like to be in our stakeholders' shoes as we plan our engagement and align our work with their priorities.

If you're interested in being part of our panel or expert group email [email protected]

Listening to our connections customers

We have a range of connections events and webinars every year to support and engage with our connections customers.

We have experts on hand at our customer connections surgeries to help find potential solutions for project needs and future requirements.

Engaging Members of Parliament

We understand the important role Members of Parliament (MPs) have in representing and supporting the communities that we both serve. Our regional teams are ready to meet and keep their local MPs up-to-date on how we are powering their constituents' lives. As part of our major investment works, we seek to keep our local MPs informed so they can answer any constituent questions.

At a national level we engage with a range of political stakeholder to ensure the needs of our customers and the energy sector are appropriately recognised and considered prior to any key legislation.

Engaging local councillors

Local councillors play a key role in the communities we serve. We understand the importance of keeping them updated as part of our commitment to keeping our customers and communities informed.

In advance of major investment projects our regional teams seek to keep local councillors updated on planned work to improve the network that powers their wards. This can include advanced briefings, email updates and one-to-one meetings.

Updating our stakeholders

As part of our commitment to engaging with our customers, keeping them informed and providing opportunities to work with us to help shape our future business plans, we produce a number of bulletins and briefings.

If you'd like to receive copies, please email [email protected]

Events and roundtables

We host a range of physical and virtual events and roundtables to engage our stakeholders.

In early 2020 we delivered a series of digital roundtables which were also enhanced to support our robust RIIO-ED2 planning approach. Stakeholders from across academia, local governance and industry were invited to join us online to give their views enabling them to share plans, collective needs and goals for the region, and highlight any pressing challenges.

We're now actively engaging with our stakeholders on Emerging Thinking for our business plan for 2023 and beyond. To be part of this visit our event pages.
