Our locations

With a network of offices across the region, and power lines running from the border with Scotland down to northern Lincolnshire, and from the North Sea coast across to the Yorkshire Dales, whether you're spending your days at a desk or out in the field, you could find yourself working in all kinds of interesting places.

Graduate Trainees and Technical Trainees

If you’re dedicated and passionate about becoming a highly skilled engineer, we can help energise your career.

As a Power Engineer Apprentice (Graduate Trainee or Technical Trainee) you will gain professional experience, complete relevant projects and training, and develop and apply your academic knowledge. Our two-year programme, which was rated Outstanding by Ofsted, will help you become a well-rounded engineer with a successful track record of courses, placements and experience behind you so you can be placed in your permanent role in Northern Powergrid.

Craftsperson Apprenticeships

Do you thrive working outdoors, love working with your hands and want to be an integral part of a skilled team?

As a craftsperson apprentice you'll be trained in the specialist skills needed to work safely and competently on our electricity network in a variety of roles. Through our two-year programme,  rated 'Outstanding' by Ofsted, you’ll gain professional experience, complete training courses, study for recognised qualifications at college, and all whilst receiving a salary from the day you start your career with us.

Whatever your background or skills, you can be assured of a new and exciting career opportunity and 98 per cent of our apprentices stay with us to continue their career.

Foundation Degree Programme

Our Foundation Degree programme will equip you with the skills you need to begin an exciting career as a Power Engineer Apprentice. We’ll fund your academic studies, and our flexible approach means you’ll have the opportunity to work anywhere from the Scottish Borders to northern Lincolnshire. In addition to your studies, you’ll have the opportunity to visit factories that build and supply our equipment, including pivotal items such as transformers, cables and switchgear.

Our three-year programme, rated Outstanding by Ofsted, has been designed to give you a broad picture of Northern Powergrid and the skills, qualifications and experience to be a first-class engineer. 

Craft Attendants

If you are motivated, well-organised and love being outdoors a career as a Craft Attendant might be the career for you.

You'll assist a qualified cable jointer working as part of a two person team on tasks associated with the repair, construction and maintenance of our network of underground cables.

As a Craft Assistant you'll receive training both on the job, and in our dedicated training school. If you demonstrate initiative and have the desire to learn new tasks, there are also opportunities to progress your career with us.

Learning and development

Supporting and developing our colleagues is important to us. From our 'Best Welcome' to help you settle to our range of training programmes, our Learning and Development Academy will support you so that you can deliver your role effectively and increase your skills.

Our training schools in Durham, Castleford, Swillington and Hull, provide expert training to ensure our frontline teams have the skills to safely work on the energy systems of today and tomorrow.

We are the first distribution network operator in the UK to have its apprenticeship programmes and training rated 'Outstanding'.
