Powering Community Energy

The path to net zero requires everyone to act. We share that responsibility and recognise we have a key role to play in facilitating the low carbon transition. It is essential that we work with the communities we serve to address the climate emergency.

By working together, we can deliver better outcomes for all of our customers. Supporting the growth of community energy in our region will help us reach the most vulnerable in our society, as many community energy organisations are trusted intermediaries focussed on the environmental, social, and local economic impacts of our energy system.

Working with our communities, we want to be a proactive, trusted partner providing expert support and capacity building, whilst being a responsible, ethical business. We want to build positive relationships with community and local energy organisations that can benefit us all.

It’s clear that Northern Powergrid is taking its role as an enabler of community energy seriously. The company is demonstrating its commitment to delivering meaningful environmental, social, and local economic benefits across Yorkshire and the North East and we look forward to working with them to make that happen.

Energise Barnsley

We teamed up with Moixa and Energise Barnsley to deliver a ground-breaking trial that demonstrated how clusters of home energy storage batteries could increase capacity on the electricity network and enable more homes to install solar panels.

HartlePower CIC

Beneficiary of our Community Energy Seed Fund, HartlePower’s project built on a pilot scheme that offered energy advice, helped people to switch suppliers and make savings through implementing energy saving measures in their homes. HartlePower CIC/CIO are now an established community organisation in Hartlepool.

Activating Community Engagement (ACE)

Mobile games could soon become an important tool for energy companies as they seek to manage power demand and keep costs down for customers. We partnered with GenGame on our ACE project that saw more than 2,000 customers competing to win cash prizes by turning off washing machines, televisions, and other household devices to reduce their energy consumption at times of high demand.
