    Transmission Interface

    Transmission Interface

With unprecedented demand for large connections at both the transmission and distribution level, we're committed to working with industry and our customers to accelerate the major connections process in our region.

Transmission Interface

The electricity system across Great Britain is increasingly complex, with unprecedented demand for new connections at both the transmission and distribution levels.

Major transmission reinforcement works are needed to accommodate the demand for new connections.

We're working hard to accelerate the major connections process in our region. We want to ensure anyone seeking a connection to our distribution network understands the implications, including the impact on their project's lead time and cost, and so we've developed a suite of tools to help developers, prospective customers and our stakeholders make more informed decisions about how and where they can connect.

We'll continue to engage and work collaboratively to develop and deploy solutions that will get our customers connected quickly, efficiently and at lowest cost.

NESO's Pause of the Transmission Queue

The NESO will be pausing on the receipt of transmission generation connections applications from the end of January. This is part of the wider connections reform process NESO is undertaking, to accelerate the connection of viable projects that align with national strategic energy plans.

If you're a Northern Powergrid customer, find out how this will impact you.

Connections Reform

We actively engaging on behalf of our customers in the current connections reform process which will make it easier and quicker for net zero ready projects to connect to the grid.

We've been working closely with the NESO, Ofgem, government, and industry to improve processes and accelerate the connection of projects that will boost Great Britain's energy security and support the transition to net zero.

Securities Freeze

NESO has informed customers with a transmission connection agreement with NESO transmission of an expected freeze on updating securities and liabilities amounts. Find out what this means for embedded generation projects with a connections agreement with Northern Powergrid.

Major Projects Look-up Tool

Our Major Projects Pipeline Look-Up Tool delivers enhanced insight and visibility for developers and prospective connections customers. It provides an overview of the capacity headroom available at each of our Grid Supply Points (GSPs), helping them to identify the areas where they'll be most likely to secure a quick and cost-effective connection. It also benefits customers with projects already in the pipeline, by helping them to identify where they are in the connections queue.

Statement of Works

A Statement of Works is required whenever a proposed connection could have a material impact on the transmission system. It involves an assessment that's completed by the transmission system operator to determine whether transmission reinforcement work may be needed, as a result of the proposed connection to the distribution network. If no transmission constraints are identified, the distribution network operator (DNO) can proceed with the connection - if transmission constraints are identified then DNOs must submit a Project Progression.

Project Progressions

A Project Progression is required whenever constraints on the transmission system are identified.

Our Project Progression tracker is one of the suite of tools we've developed to help our customers make more informed decisions about how and where to connect. It provides users with status updates for live Modification Applications and Project Progression submissions.

Our tracker is updated every month, and includes key project milestones completion dates. It also has information on any applications that have not yet been submitted to the transmission system operator for review.

Appendix G

Our Appendix G dataset provides an overview of Northern Powergrid's contracted position with the transmission system operator. It includes information about what's connected, and what is about to be connected, at each of our GSPs where an Appendix G is in place.

Delegated Technical Limits

Through the phased deployment of delegated technical limits, which requires customers to accept a non-firm connection, until the required transmission reinforcement works can be completed, we expect to be able to significantly accelerate the major connections process for customers in our region.

We've developed a Technical Limits tracker to provide customers with better visibility and a comprehensive overview of the key dates and milestones in the process.

Major Connections Webinar with NESO

In February 2025, we were joined by representatives from NESO for the latest in our series of quarterly stakeholder webinars, where we focused on Connections Reform and the major changes to policy and processes that are on the horizon.

If you're a customer or stakeholder seeking a major connection to our distribution network, watch the recording for the latest information. You'll find recordings from all our previous webinars in the resources section below.
