
Phil is the President and Chief Executive of Northern Powergrid and has been in the electricity distribution sector since 1993. He is a chartered electrical engineer and progressed through a number of technical and managerial roles in Yorkshire Electricity prior to the merger with Northern Electric in 2001. He joined the board of the combined companies in 2002 and became President in 2006.
Phil remains actively involved in policy development at a national level in the UK, having served on advisory groups that advise the UK Government and the energy regulator, Ofgem, on the development of networks for low carbon economy, sustainable development and consumer protection. He is currently Chair of the Energy Networks Association, and has in the past served as President of the Institute of Asset Management, Chairman of the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Council of the Confederation of British Industry. In 2007 he was awarded an OBE for his services to the energy industry.
Northern Powergrid's safety first culture is reflected with senior leadership of the company's health, safety and training function reporting directly to Phil.

Louise was appointed as Director of Customer Service in 2023 after being Head of Customer Services and a member of the Executive Team since 2021. Louise joined Northern Powergrid in 2018 as Customer Service Programme Manager, having previously held senior roles in both the public and private sectors focused on Customer Service, Shared Services, Operational Leadership and transformational change.
Louise has overall accountability for our customer experience and customer satisfaction, and she leads the way in driving change to ensure that our customers are at the heart of everything we do.
As Director of Customer Services, Louise’s remit includes Customer Service – incorporating our priority service customers, Customer Care, Customer Relationship Management and Performance and Insight.

Andy is the Commercial Director at Northern Powergrid. He started his career in the electricity industry in 1984 and his career spans both the electricity and rail sectors, undertaking a number of senior roles with an operational and commercial bias.
Andy’s executive accountabilities include Northern Powergrid’s Procurement and Logistics function, supplier performance and driving cost efficiency programmes across the business.
As part of Northern Powergrid’s wider business, Andy’s responsibilities also include the development and growth of both the Smart Metering business and Northern Powergrid’s contracting business, IUS.

Alex joined Northern Powergrid in January 2015 and became Finance Director in March 2022. He is a Chartered Accountant having completed his training with KPMG, spending seven years in their Restructuring practice.
Prior to becoming Finance Director, Alex was the Director of Performance and Planning, leading on the development of the company’s long term business plan. He has also spent time leading the company’s engineering and major projects operations teams.

Tom joined Northern Powergrid in November 2013 and he became General Counsel in July 2015.
He is a solicitor, having qualified with Herbert Smith in the company's corporate energy and infrastructure team.
Tom holds executive accountabilities for Legal, Company Secretariat and Regulatory Compliance.

Gareth was appointed as Director of Health, Safety and Training in 2023 after joining the Executive Team in 2021 as Head of Health, Safety and Training.
Gareth joined Northern Powergrid in 1988 and has experience across leadership roles in operations, supply chain and commercial.
He is a member of the Electricity Industry Health and Safety Committee and is chair of the industry’s Occupational Health Committee and National HESAC Committee.

Jodie joined the Executive Team in May 2022 as our Director of People and Change, having previously held a number of senior roles in operations, change management and Human Resources in the utilities and technology research sectors.
Jodie leads the way to enhance our colleague experience, creating an environment that supports high performing teams and nurtures growth. She is the custodian of our culture and principles and is front and centre of developing outstanding leaders.
She is the driving force for enabling change through our workforce commitments and talent agenda – aligning our vision and principles so that we are, and continue to be, an employer of choice across the communities we serve.
As Director of People and Change, Jodie has executive responsibility for HR and People, Communications, Property, Change, Talent and Organisation Development, and Performance and Planning Teams. Jodie is also a Trustee of the Northern Powergrid Foundation, a grant-making charity that supports our communities across the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.

Paul joined in the summer of 2021 with more than 30 years’ experience in power networks.
He has held several senior leadership positions, and before joining Northern Powergrid worked in the consulting sector where he led one of the business units in WSP, an engineering consultancy.
Paul has a depth of client-facing, commercial and technical leadership experience in the energy network sector, both in the UK and overseas. He has worked on developing and delivering major new renewable investments and with network companies, both in consultancy and directly for a distribution network operator. Prior to joining Northern Powergrid, Paul worked on a major cross-channel interconnector project. This, coupled with extensive knowledge of renewable and low carbon technologies, means Paul is well-positioned to lead the Energy Systems team in key areas such as decarbonisation, innovation and flexibility services.
As Director of Energy Systems, Paul has overall accountability for Policy, Decarbonisation, DSO and Flexibility Services, Sustainability, Innovation, Major Connections and Stakeholder Relations.

Mark became Northern Powergrid’s Director of Engineering in 2022. He is a Chartered Engineer having completed his training with Reyrolle, spending time as a protection engineer there before joining Yorkshire Electricity in 1999.
He has progressed through various engineering leadership roles within the organisation before joining the executive. Mark has a depth of experience in the asset management and planning of electrical power systems.
As Director of Engineering, he has accountability for Investment Planning and Delivery, Engineering Policy and Standards, System Planning and Design, Smartgrid Implementation, Reliability Performance and Environmental Performance.

Paul joined Northern Powergrid in May 2018 and became Director of Information Systems in January 2022.
He has more than 17 years’ of expertise working in the technology field, having had a diverse range of experience ranging from large scale infrastructure implementations to business transformation programmes while leading multi-disciplined teams.
Paul leads on Northern Powergrid’s Information Systems, cyber security and data and digitalisation strategic priorities.

Steve is a Chartered Engineer and joined Northern Powergrid in July 2001, having started his career as a graduate engineer in manufacturing operations.
Steve has since risen through multiple engineering and management positions and was appointed Interim Director of Field Operations in November 2024.
The Field Operations team is Northern Powergrid’s largest single directorate, with Steve providing leadership for 1,800 of our colleagues across the organisation’s operating area of the North East and Yorkshire. Steve’s executive responsibilities focus on improving the efficiency, productivity and safety of our operational teams, whilst delivering a first-rate service to our customers.
A critical responsibility of Steve’s executive role is leading Northern Powergrid’s response to all major incidents which impact the electricity network, including weather related storm events.
