With communities across the region celebrating Bonfire Night and fireworks this weekend (1-3 November) or on or around the 5th of November, people are being urged to stay safe and stay clear of power lines and substations.
We want to ensure people know the potential dangers that could spoil their evening, or result in severe or fatal injuries, if they set off fireworks or light bonfires anywhere near their local electricity network.
Gareth Pearson, Northern Powergrid’s Director of Health, Safety and Training, said: "Customer safety is very important to us, and we want people to enjoy Bonfire Night and fireworks, but to do so safely.
“If possible, attend an organised display in your area rather than setting off your own fireworks - but if you do - please take a moment to check your surroundings first. Look up and check where our overhead power lines are to ensure you're well away from our network or your local substation.
“Building bonfires or setting off fireworks anywhere near the electricity network is extremely dangerous as power lines on wooden poles carry voltages of up to 132,000 volts. Also, electricity can jump gaps, so a poorly placed bonfire could reduce vital clearance distances.
"By taking these extra precautions and remembering ‘Look Up It’s Live!’ everyone can have a great time and stay safe."
To report an electricity network safety issue call 105. Dial 999 in an emergency.
